What is Cardiometabolic health?

Did you know that only 1 in 14 American adults have optimal heart and metabolic health?
A recent article, July 2022, in the Journal of American College of Cardiology stated that only 6.8% of US adults have optimal cardiometabolic health, declining from 1999-2000.
Metabolic health is determined by adiposity (fat storage/healthy weight and waist circumference), blood glucose, (normal blood sugar level without taking medication), blood lipids (ideal cholesterol, HDL, and LDL levels without medication), blood pressure (in the normal range without medication) and clinical cardiovascular disease (no evidence of previous heart attack or stroke).
You may wonder what caused these alarming statistics. Unfortunately, our standard American diet (SAD) is heavily influenced by refined sugar, saturated fat, preservatives and empty calories. This is compounded by alcohol consumption, little or no physical activity, more hours on our screens, and very little sleep.
Inflammation
Science has proven that chronic, low-grade Inflammation is the key contributing component to cardiovascular disease, cancer, type-2 diabetes, and other medical conditions.
I have said many times that one day we will look at sugar the same way we look at smoking and tobacco usage. Refined sugar is so toxic to our bodies. The average American adult, teenager, and child consume about 19 teaspoons (77 grams) a day in sugar. Why you may ask? Sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine and heroin. It activates the same pleasure zones in our brains. I challenge you to place 19 teaspoons in a glass to illustrate the amount of sugar we are consuming daily.
What is Good Metabolic Health?
Good metabolic health is where your body can digest and absorb nutrients from food with healthy, stable levels of blood sugar, blood lipids, and insulin. It's important to avoid these big spikes as they can contribute to an unfavorable long-term impact on your health.
