Over the past decade, we began chipping away at the toxic burden our bodies have endured for nearly a half century.  We made a conscious choice to prioritize the best options and to reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants in our daily lives.   This approach focuses on enhancing well-being by minimizing toxins in our environment, diet, and personal care products.  Our journey has been gradual, and we are not done yet!  I empower you to make these little tweaks that will make the biggest impact on your overall well-being. Here are a few easy swaps to help you live your best life!

 

Benefits of a Low Toxin Lifestyle

 

Improved Health: Reducing exposure to toxins can lead to better overall health, including improved skin, respiratory, and organ health.  All disease starts at the cellular level.  Finding the root cause of the problem will have a ripple effect on your overall health.

 

Enhanced Energy Levels: By minimizing toxins that can weigh down the body's systems, many people experience increased energy and vitality.  Nourishing your body with proper food and nutrition is the fuel for life long vitality.

 

Environmental Impact: A low toxin lifestyle often involves using eco-friendly products, which contributes to environmental conservation.  Reducing plastic waste and using products that are free from harmful chemicals is better for all living things on our planet.   

 

 

Steps to a Low-Toxin Lifestyle

Evaluate and purge household products.  You can go all in and make over your home, or you can make simple swaps when it is time to replenish your items.  This is the most cost-effective way.

 

Cleaning Products: A simple swap to natural cleaning products that are free from harsh chemicals. Become a label reader and not just what the package is claiming.  Currently, there are no regulations for marketing claims.  Be aware of “greenwashing”. These deceptive marketing tactics where companies make false or misleading claims about their products or how they conduct business to help influence your purchase.

 

Personal Care Items:  The personal care space is loaded with toxic chemicals.  Many women, men, and children are exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals during their daily care. These toxic components can burden the body and disrupt the endocrine system.  These health problems can manifest into reproductive issues, developmental problems, thyroid function, neurological disorders, metabolic disorders, immune system dysregulation, organ disorders, and cancer.  Opt for personal care products that are free from parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. Consider brands that use natural or organic ingredients.

 

 

Improve Indoor Air Quality

Ventilation: Ensure your home is well-ventilated to reduce indoor air pollution.

 

Air Purifiers: Use air purifiers with HEPA filters to remove airborne particles and allergens.

 

Houseplants: Introduce houseplants that naturally filter toxins from the air, such as spider plants, peace lilies, and ferns.

 

Eliminate Synthetic Air Fresheners & Candles: Many of these products contain toxic chemicals like phthalates and volatile organic compounds containing benzene, formaldehyde and toluene can cause breathing problems, allergies, headaches and cancer.

 

 

Consume a Clean Diet

Organic Foods: Prioritize organic produce to avoid pesticide residues. When organic options are not available, thoroughly wash and peel fruits and vegetables.  I use a grapeseed extract and soak my fruits and vegetables.

 

Whole Foods: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods to minimize exposure to food additives and preservatives.

 

Limit Processed Foods: Reduce intake of processed foods which often contain artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.

 

 

Be Mindful of Water Quality

Filtered Water: Use a high-quality water filter to remove contaminants from tap water. Consider filters that reduce chlorine, lead, fluoride, and other harmful substances.  We have a Berkey Filter and our next purchase will be a whole house water purification system.  There are several stainless steel water purification devices on the market to best fit your needs.

 

Stainless Steel or Glass Bottles: Avoid plastic bottles that may leach chemicals, especially when exposed to heat.  Did you know that we consume on average 5 grams of microplastics per week?  That is equivalent to the weight of a credit card.   We use mason jars, glass and stainless steel containers for food storage. 

 

Reduce Plastic Use

Reusable Bags and Containers: Use reusable shopping bags and food containers to minimize plastic waste and exposure to BPA or phthalates.

 

Avoid Single-Use Plastics: Limit use of single-use plastics, such as straws and cutlery, which contribute to environmental pollution and may contain harmful chemicals.

 

Educate Yourself

Stay Informed: Keep up to date on the latest research regarding toxins and health. Knowledge empowers you to make better choices for your well-being.

 

Read Labels: Learn to read product labels carefully to identify harmful ingredients and make informed purchasing decisions.
